Team: ADAS | Europe

About the Role

We are looking for a hands-on Application Engineer to provide day-to-day technical support to automotive OEMs and selected Tier 1 suppliers across Europe, with an initial focus on Mercedes-Benz.

Based at our Böblingen office, you will help customers integrate and operate Hesai Lidar sensors in vehicles and test setups. Your work will include sensor configuration, firmware updates, troubleshooting, testing, and product demonstrations.

This is a practical engineering role requiring direct work with sensors, vehicles, and customer engineering teams. You will resolve issues locally where possible and work closely with our engineering teams in Shanghai and Palo Alto when further support is needed.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide day-to-day technical support to automotive OEMs and selected Tier 1 suppliers, initially focusing on Mercedes-Benz projects.
  • Support Lidar integration into customer vehicles and test setups, including installation, power supply, cabling, communication interfaces, sensor configuration, and initial operation.
  • Perform firmware flashing and updates, check software and hardware compatibility, and verify correct sensor operation after changes.
  • Troubleshoot sensor hardware, software, connectivity, time synchronization, and point cloud issues using diagnostic tools, Hesai SDKs, and ROS/ROS2 where applicable.
  • Prepare and run customer demonstrations, including setting up sensors, checking equipment, generating data, and explaining product operation and performance.
  • Provide on-site support for vehicle integration, testing, issue investigation, and technical discussions.
  • Analyze point cloud data, logs, and configuration details to reproduce problems and support root cause investigation.
  • Take ownership of customer technical issues, coordinating with engineering teams in Shanghai when needed and verifying solutions before closing issues with the customer.
  • Maintain demo equipment and test setups at the Böblingen office, so they are ready for customer use.
  • Document technical issues, test results, solutions, and customer feedback, and keep customers informed of progress.
  • Work with Sales, Product, Program and Engineering teams to clarify customer requirements and support ongoing projects.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Computer Science, Robotics, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Hands-on experience in application engineering, vehicle or sensor integration, testing, or customer-facing technical support.
  • Practical experience configuring and updating hardware devices and troubleshooting hardware/software integration and communication issues.
  • Working knowledge of Linux, Ethernet networking, and diagnostic tools.
  • Basic programming or scripting skills, preferably Python or C++.
  • Ability to investigate technical problems independently, explain findings clearly, and follow issues through to resolution.
  • Professional working proficiency in German and English.
  • Willingness to work from our Böblingen office and travel regularly to customer sites in Germany and elsewhere in Europe.
  • Ability to work effectively with engineering teams in Shanghai and Palo Alto across time zones.

Preferred

  • Experience supporting automotive OEMs or Tier 1 suppliers, particularly Mercedes-Benz.
  • Experience with Lidar or other automotive sensors, ADAS, or autonomous driving systems.
  • Familiarity with ROS/ROS2, sensor SDKs, point cloud visualization, and data recording and analysis.
  • Experience with automotive communication interfaces, sensor time synchronization, and vehicle test equipment.
  • Familiarity with automotive development, testing, and validation processes.

What We're Looking For

Someone who enjoys practical engineering work and is comfortable working directly with customers, sensors, and vehicles. You should be able to prepare a demo, update and configure a sensor, investigate an integration issue, and work with our engineering teams to deliver a solution.
